About Butterfly and Wildlife Park

Butterfly & Wildlife Park at Long Sutton, Spalding, Lincolnshire, was voted the county’s leading family attraction in 2003, and as well as being a leading conservation facility, it offers a great family day out whatever the weather.

A ticket to the 15-acre Butterfly & Wildlife Park grants access to a renowned Tropical House – one of the UK’s largest - with hundreds of variegated butterflies and birds wheeling about the exotic fauna. Among them are Sugar Birds that feed from the feeding stations along the walkways, populated with plants including Clivia miniata, Lantana camara, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Heliotropium Indicum, Strellizia reginae, Brugmansia and wall-climbing Bougainvilleas. There’s also an abundance of reptiles, insects and Leaf-cutting Ants (with a colony in the Ant Room), while the Creepy Crawlie House has the likes of the red-kneed tarantula and scorpions.

The family attraction also boasts slithering and crawling residents such as Caiman, toads, frogs, rat snakes, corn snakes, iguanas, lizards, water dragons, geckos, terrapins, millipedes, stick insects and snails – just the ticket if you want to frighten your mum!

A family day out to Butterfly & Wildlife Park includes furrier friends too, from the Raccoons and Pygmy Goats to Pot Bellied Pigs, llama, miniature pony, possums, sheep, rabbits and guinea pigs. For twitchers there are plenty of avian delights, Birds of Prey Flying Displays occurring daily at noon and 3pm, featuring nine types of owl, two of falcon, buzzards, vultures and the American bald eagle. Other exotic species on show at the family attraction include the majestic Asian water buffalo, Bavarian mini pigs and bird species such as the rhea.

In addition, the Butterfly & Wildlife Park Gardens are open to ticket holders and make for an essential part of a family day out to Long Sutton. Among the scented highlights are Solidago (goldenrod), Kniphofia, (red hot pokers), Buddleias, digitalis (foxgloves), Yarrow, Geraniums (cornsbill) and Lupins, which attract bees and other insects, as well as a variety of birds. The herb garden features Borage Rosemary, sage, Bergamot (bee balm) and lavender, while the Wild Copse has numerous types of trees and natural vegetation. The ancient fruit orchard is a cropping farm with a trail to explore, and the Tea Garden provides refreshments in a relaxing and natural environment.

To keep junior ticket holders to the Butterfly & Wildlife Park Gardens happy, there’s an adventure playground and crazy golf, and there are extensive car parks with picnic areas, a licensed tea room and gift shop. The Adventure Play Area boasts a 40-metre aerial zip wire, tower slide, adventure trail, climbing net, ledge climbing wall, swinging steps, a toddlers’ Giggleswick climbing frame and sandpit, and a children’s driving circuit with cars, tractors and lorry.

Wheelchairs are available to ensure a fun family day out for everybody, and a variety of special tours can be booked, with details on the Butterfly & Wildlife Park Gardens website.
